At the networking event "Meet & Greet with the German chambers in Asia Pacific" AHK member companies had the opportunity to discuss third-market business potentials with AHK representatives from several German Chambers in the Asian-Pacific region.

The first HR Roundtable of the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Japan (AHK Japan) took place on July 3 at the premises of AHK Japan.

On June 26, 2018 the winners of the German Innovation Award - Gottfried Wagener Prize 2018 were announced during the 10th anniversary ceremony of the award at the Hotel Grand Hyatt Tokyo.

On 26 June, C-INK Co., Ltd. from Okayama was announced winner of the German Innovation Challenge – HighTech Startup Forum 2018 (GIC) at the Hotel Grand Hyatt Tokyo in front of an audience of more than 100 participants.

On May 24, the German Asparagus Dinner Osaka took place at Hilton Osaka. Nearly 280 guests enjoyed wine and asparagus, and enjoyed the opportunity to network in a comfortable setting.

On May 18, the German Asparagus Dinner Tokyo was held at Palace Hotel Tokyo. The beautifully decorated tables in the big banquet room with the impressive view over night-time Tokyo invited the around 400 guests to enjoy networking over wine and asparagus.

Health is of the highest importance and should be priority number one for individuals, nations, and government, yet everyone struggles to manage due to its complexity, diversity, and sensitivity. The question of “Medical Cost vs Patient Value” may not always be in sync for individuals and for care providers/the commercial industry, and government priorities may also be different from what is aspired by individuals, care providers, or corporations.

On April 17, 2018, the AHK Japan held a symposium with the title "Energy Efficiency in Germany and Japan: Solutions for Commercial, Public and Residential Buildings". The daylong event that was kindly supported by the German Embassy, JETRO, the Institute for Building Environment and Energy Conservation (IBEC), and the International Building Materials Forum (IBMF), was well received by the almost 80 attendees.

On December 20, 2017, the German Chamber Talent Café took place for the fourth time in total and for the second time in corporation with the Waseda University. The participating companies could use the facilities of the Waseda University to install a company booth and participate in panel discussions to briefly introduce their business and engage in conversation with the students.

During the last years, one keyword seems to be omnipresent on the global stage: the ongoing digitalization. Germany as well as Japan are following their own approaches with the German concept “Industrie 4.0” and the Japanese strategy “Connected industries”.

AHK Japan had the pleasure to welcome the German Ambassador Dr. Hans Carl von Werthern as a special speaker for the working group “Young Leaders Forum” on November 22, 2017.

The German Finance Roundtable met at the offices of Deutsche Bank Group Japan on November 14. Over 20 participants gathered to listen to the views of experts in the field of Bitcoin, digitalization and FinTech.

On November 6 - 10 the first business initiation trip to Japan with a focus on cosmetics/care products and detergents took place, as part of a market development program by the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) for German SMEs.

On October 12 and 13, about 400 guests gathered at the Happo-En in Tokyo, while on the 26th 120 wine friends joined the Wine Festival at the Oriental Garden in Osaka.

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the German Chamber of Commerce & Industry in Japan (AHK Japan) took place on June 6 at the Grand Hyatt Tokyo.

At the AGM, five new candidates were elected to join the Board of Directors and one Board Member was re-elected.

AHK Japan had the pleasure to welcome the Managing Director of Schaeffler Japan Co., Ltd., Mr. Shinzo Yotsumoto, as a speaker on the topic of ‘"Hon-Ne" and "Tate-Mae" -Business Barriers in Japan’. With 40 years of experience in various countries and companies, Mr. Yotsumoto was able to explain this part of Japanese culture to over 50 participants.

160 young talents came together to network and make new friends regardless of nationality, company or industry affiliation. 15 members of the ‘Young Leaders Forum’ – the working group for young professionals of AHK Japan, represented the German-Japanese business community.

On March 21, the evening seminar “Data Protection in Japan in light of the recent Changes to the Law” was held a second time due to popular demand. The seminar outlined the key changes to the revised Japanese Act on the Protection of Personal Information becoming effective on May 30, 2017.

The speakers Dr. Tobias Schiebe, LL.M. (ARQIS Foreign Law Office) and Ms. Mariko Eto (TMI Associates) explained the legal framework when ending employment relationships in Japan and illustrated typical, sometimes surprising pitfalls in this regard. The speakers focused on practical recommendations on how to deal with difficult cases, such as redundancy, low-performance or long-term illness.

The first Executive Insights of 2017 on February 24 had the honor to welcome Mr. Takeshi Nakane, Former Ambassador to Germany, as a speaker on the topical issue of “Japan’s Policy towards the Middle East”.

In 2017, the focus is on the bilateral cooperation regarding „Industrie 4.0” between Germany and Japan. Japan is the official partner country for this year’s CeBIT. Around 120 Japanese exhibitors will take part in the biggest and most important ICT-fair in Hannover.

The first Luncheon of AHK Japan in 2017 was held on February 9 as a joint event together with the Swiss Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Japan at the ANA Intercontinental Hotel.
