Learning the Skills That Keep People Safe and Society Moving — While Working
Automotive technicians do much more than simply repair vehicles. They play a vital role in keeping people safe and supporting mobility and logistics through passenger cars and trucks.
Even as vehicles become increasingly digitalised and electrified, the ability to accurately assess a vehicle’s condition and maintain it to a high technical standard is becoming more important than ever.
To train the next generation of automotive technicians, AHK Japan launched its Automotive Technician Training Programme in 2024, based on Germany’s dual vocational training system, which combines practical work with classroom-based learning.
The three-year training programme consists of approximately 70% practical training at a company and 30% theoretical education at partner educational institutions. Trainees learn while employed by the company and receive a salary, with their tuition fees covered by the company.
Practical training takes place at Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus service facilities or at authorised BMW dealerships. In addition to acquiring the knowledge required for Japanese automotive technician certification, trainees develop technical skills and expertise based on German standards, as well as gaining hands-on experience with the latest technologies, including electric vehicles (EVs).
