Dear Members of the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Japan,

My name is Karsten Michaelis, and I am honored to stand for re-election to the AHK Japan Board.

Over the past 3 years, I have had the privilege of living and working in Japan together with my family, leading DHL Global Forwarding Japan. My career has been shaped across Asia Pacific since 2002, with assignments in Hong Kong, Bangladesh, Australia, Singapore, and now Japan—providing me with a deeply regional perspective combined with strong German roots.

Why Logistics Matters Now More Than Ever

Recent global disruptions—from the COVID-19 pandemic to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East —have clearly demonstrated that logistics is not just an operational backbone, but a strategic enabler of business resilience and growth.

At DHL Global Forwarding Japan, we are connecting industries and economies every day—supporting supply chains that range from life-saving pharmaceuticals and semiconductors to automotive, fashion, and even scallops and perishables from Hokkaido.

For the German business community in Japan, efficient, resilient, and sustainable logistics is a critical success factor—and an area where we can collaborate more closely.

What I Have Delivered So Far

During my first tenure on the AHK Board, I committed to making logistics more visible and relevant to our community

I am confident that we have made strong progress:

  • Increased visibility of logistics topics within the AHK network
  • Active engagement with many of you on day-to-day logistics challenges
  • Adressing ESG and Sustainability topics, for example at the AHK Sustainability Night.
  • Strengthening the next generation, including hosting various German student groups and engaging young talent interested in careers in Japan. The next event that I am hosting together with Chris Seidel is the Young Talent Group at our Tokyo Headquarters in July.

These efforts reflect my belief that AHK must be both a platform for dialogue and a catalyst for action.

My Priorities for the Next Term

Looking ahead, I see three areas that are of particular interest.

1. Talent & Future Workforce

Japan’s talent challenge is real—and also an opportunity.
We need to position logistics and supply chain management as innovative, international, and purpose-driven careers.

2. Sustainable Supply Chains (ESG)

Sustainability is no longer optional.
I aim to further drive practical, scalable green logistics solutions, while strengthening awareness and collaboration across industries.

3. Being your voice and Logistics Subject Matter Expert in the AHK Board

My Commitment

I bring:

  • Over two decades of logistics and leadership experience in Asia Pacific
  • A strong network across industries and markets
  • A clear ambition to be visible, available and to drive topics that are relevant to all of you.

Thank you for your continued trust. I kindly ask for your support and your vote in this year’s election to the AHK Board.
