This year, three awardees will be honored for their application-oriented research work in the areas of Materials and Energy, Digitalization and Mobility, and Life Sciences.
The German Innovation Award is named after Gottfried Wagener, who was a key contributor to Japan’s Advanced Education and Technology Development in the Meiji Period. Born in Hannover, Germany, Gottfried Wagener came to Japan at the age of 37 in 1868. He taught physics and chemistry at the University of Tokyo and the Kyoto Prefectural Medical School (the present Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine) and was one of the founders of the Tokyo Vocational School (the present Tokyo Institute of Technology).
