Background

In order to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, offshore wind energy is seen as one of the most promising and highly anticipated sources of electricity in Japan as it can be produced in large quantities. While the legal framework is constantly being developed since the “Act of Promoting Utilization of Sea Areas in Development of Power Generation Facilities Using Maritime Renewable Energy Resources” coming into force in April 2019, last year a new milestone was reached with the agreement of government and industry on a wind energy target of 10 GW by 2030 and 30-45 GW by 2040.

Meanwhile in Germany, a total of 252 MW of new offshore wind power facilities came into operation in the first half of 2019 bringing the total of offshore wind power facilities in Germany to around 6,6 GW. In addition, the German Federal Government plans to expand the total offshore wind power output to 15 GW by 2030.

To overcome the ongoing climate change and potential energy issues, further developments of the offshore wind sector are crucial. With the promotion of economic exchange between Germany Japan, AHK Japan intends to further support the industry in the development.

This event is organised in the framework of the German Energy Solutions Initiative, coordinated and financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK).
