Toshiba. Hitachi. Mitsui. Siemens. GE. These are just a few examples of changing industrial giants. Today, more and more conglomerates are concentrating on their central business, leaving any diversification in the shadows. With the ever-changing economic environment, it seems that conglomerates only make sense if synergies can really be leveraged – it is no longer a question of size and diversification, but of adapting best to the rapidly changing environmental conditions. As more "pure players" come into the game, focusing solely on a core business – will conglomerates survive in this day and age?

Oliver Burkhard is Chief Human Resources Officer at thyssenkrupp in Essen since 2013.

Following his apprenticeship as a public administration clerk from 1988 to 1991, Oliver Burkhard initially worked in the National Accounts department of the German Federal Statistical Office, Wiesbaden, from 1991 to 1997. From 1993 to 1998 he also studied business administration at Mainz University of Applied Sciences in parallel with his work.

In 1997 Oliver Burkhard joined the IG Metall metalworkers’ trade union, initially as Political Secretary on the Federal Executive Committee. From 2002 to 2004 he was District Secretary/Secretary for Collective Bargaining at IG Metall in North Rhine-Westphalia, before returning to the IG Metall Federal Executive Committee in 2005 as head of the collective bargaining policy department. From the end of 2007 to September 2012, he was District Manager of IG Metall in North Rhine-Westphalia.
