German Lightweight Technology Online Symposium

As part of the market entry program funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, twelve German lightweight industry companies are taking part in a digital business matching program in Japan. The program includes a three-day online symposium. The aim of the event is to promote German-Japanese cooperation in the lightweight industry and to promote the German companies among the lightweight industry target sectors in Japan, mainly the Automotive, Aerospace and Construction industries. German and Japanese companies will introduce themselves and their products. The German Federal Ministry will introduce its lightweight initiative while lightweight associations and research institutes will present their activities.

Background

The lightweight industry is of increasing importance in Japan as well as in Germany, especially in view of the current change in the mobility sector, but also due to technical developments and requirements, for example in the construction industry and in medical technology. Japan's lightweight construction sector is a global leader in several areas. The three largest Japanese manufacturers of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) together produce more than half of the world's production. At the same time, the development, production and application of lightweight solutions based on fibers made from natural materials are currently gaining importance in Japan. For example, Japan is by far the largest producer and consumer of products made from cellulose nanofibers (CNF). These conditions offer numerous opportunities for cooperation between German and Japanese companies from the lightweight construction sector and their target industries.
