Future Perspective and Expectation for German-Japanese Market
Germany is one of the leading countries in the global effort on the advancement of Additive Manufacturing technology, founded on a comprehensive ecosystem and extensive network of players covering the entire value chain of the technology which has evolved since the 1990s. This advancement in AM industry is also in line with German government’s Industry 4.0 initiative to maintain its worldwide competitiveness in advanced manufacturing. The German Additive Manufacturing ecosystem consists of: world class research institutes and academic researchers working on next generation technologies; leading technology and solution providers such as EOS GmbH to industrialize the technology; professional service providers developing new applications with the industrial sector; software companies such as Siemens PLM to automate the digital AM workflow; and most important of all, more and more world class manufacturing OEMs who are embracing the AM technology to gain their competitive advantage in terms of innovation in product design, as well as innovation in business model such as on demand manufacturing and distributed manufacturing. Siemens has invested multiple millions in setting up state of the art AM facilities in its energy business unit to speed up innovation and reduce costs of repair and maintenance; DB is printing hundreds of replacement parts for obsolete models on demand; leading automotive OEMS such as Daimler and BMW are exploring adoption of AM for mass production of automotive components; just to name a few.
Japan on the other side of the world, despite its lackluster overall economic performance in the last few decades, has maintained its global presence as a leading manufacturing hub, known for its high precision and quality, which places its manufacturing sector at the higher end of the global supply value chain. Although the development of Additive Manufacturing industry in Japan has been slower compared to Germany in recent years, we also observe the local Additive Manufacturing ecosystem is starting to take shape, driven by major manufacturing OEMs leading the investment in the new technology. For example Toyota, Honda, MHI, IHI, KHI, Nabtesco…just to name a few. We expect these OEMs to lead and drive a new wave of investment in the Additive Manufacturing technology to take full advantage of the Additive Manufacturing technology in the coming years.
